Trans and non-binary people

Nobody knows what you're feeling better than you do. But determining that you’re transgender or non-binary isn’t something you just quickly do. What does the search look like and where can you go with questions?

As a trans or non-binary person, you can come across all sorts of questions that you might not have an answer to (yet). How do you handle doubts? How do you start transitioning? How do you meet other people with the same experience? Luckily, you don’t have to answer this kind of question alone. There are always people available to support you.

How do you know if you’re transgender or non-binary?

Unfortunately, there isn’t one simple answer to this. For a lot of people it’s a search, and this search often varies from person to person. Some people know that they don’t identify with the gender they were assigned at birth from a young age, while others need longer to discover this.

You can also have doubts during your search. Although this can be very unpleasant in the moment, it is very normal. Doubt can be very useful. It can help us critically look at who we want to be and how we want to lead our lives.

What we can help you with

You never have to handle everything on your own. There are several places you can go for a listening ear or for answers to your questions.

You can contact The Transgender Infopunt with any questions about being trans. This includes legal, medical or social questions, for example. You can call at 085 130 3846 from Monday to Thursday between 14:00 and 17:00. The phone line is operated by Transgender Netwerk and Transvisie staff. They will answer your questions or connect you to someone with more knowledge on the topic.

There is a special line called Genderpraatjes (Gender talks) for young people aged 12 to 25. The anonymous chat is open every school day and lets you talk to a team of people with first-hand experience. You can use it even if you just want to get something off your chest.

Meeting other trans or non-binary people can help with your own search. The Transgender Roadmap lets you find this kind of contact group. Use the tag ‘zelfhulp en ontmoeting‘ (self-help and meeting) to find different kinds of contact groups in the Netherlands and their locations.

Non-Dutch speaking migrants in the Netherlands can contact our Trans in NL Advice Line via WhatsApp. You can reach us at 020-2446558 with any questions. Messages will be answered in English, French and Spanish.
